During my recent trip to Seattle with my wife, we felt like stopping into Ikea to see what the buzz was all about with their new line of solar powered lighting fixtures. I have a post about another fixture with some video, but I want to post a few pictures of their Sunnan solar powered desklamp.
The Sunnan fixture comes in five colors, and runs $19.99. Ikea’s designer for the Sunnan fixture was Nicolas Cortolezzis. From the product page, the lamp runs about 400-500 lux when fully charged, and drops to about 300 lux after 3-4 hours. It is of course LED sourced, at about 50,000 hours.

I have purchased several of the Sunnan solar powered desk lamps. They are really effective if used as bedside lamps for illuminating reading material. Three of them placed strategically in a darkened room will illuminate the area fairly well, but not like regular lighting to which everyone with access to “grid” power has become accustomed. The light from the Sunnan lamp is very “white,” similar to a good flashlight, but with the benefit of being hands free and positioned on a stable base. We occasionally experience power outages or go on camping trips and these lamps have proven themselves worthwhile.
